This article is a critical appraisal of the historiographic trends related to the republican period in Bolivia, i.e. to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The subject matter at stake refers to the debate about the nature of oligarchic power, the character of indigenous resistance which is directed specifically against the pressure exerted by the great landowners, as well as about the regional processes and their impact on the formation of elites, and finally new approaches and issues which complement in a way the former ones.
