In the process of establishing science-based cultural and scientific relations between Spain and Cuba, they played a key role the scientific studies and contacts taken up byœFernando Ortiz in Spain with prestigious experts in Anthropology, Criminology, Sociology and History, as well as his conception of culture, science and nation and the continuous contacts with intellectuals who were heir to the principles of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza and members of the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas. The consolidation of the cultural relations through the creation of the Institución Hispanocubana de Cultura paved the way for the reception of Spanish intellectual exiles in 1939.
