La fallida colonia escocesa en el Darién (1698-1700): una historia entrelazada

Este artículo reinterpreta la fallida colonia escocesa de Nueva Caledonia (1698-1700) en el istmo del Darién desde una perspectiva de historia entrelazada. Más allá de una lectura nacional o estrictamente política, el análisis examina las conexiones e interdependencias parciales entre Escocia, Inglaterra, España y los pueblos indígenas del Darién, destacando cómo las interacciones, tensiones y desconexiones entre estos actores moldearon el desenlace del proyecto. A partir de fuentes parlamentarias, documentos de la Compañía de Escocia y testimonios de los colonos, el estudio se inscribe en debates recientes sobre el fracaso y la desconexión, subrayando las repercusiones transnacionales del episodio. Se argumenta que el fracaso de la colonia no puede explicarse únicamente por el aislamiento o la mala planificación, sino como el resultado emergente de múltiples desajustes entre ambiciones nacionales, rivalidades imperiales y entornos naturales adversos. En última instancia, el episodio invita a reconsiderar el fracaso colonial como una categoría relacional, reveladora de las tensiones e interdependencias que definieron el mundo atlántico de fines del siglo XVII.
