Una mirada social a las familias. Su reflejo en censos y padrones (1870-1919)

This article is inscribed in a wider research on Cuban popular layers between 1878 and 1920. The analysis focuses on the family –a topic hardly treated by the Cuban historiography– as well as on the problems arisen through the use of quantitative sources such as censuses and population rolls, based on unities of residence rather than on kinship relationships. The study discloses a 1870 population roll of blacks and métisse in the quarter of San Isidro –one of the most popular quarters in Colonial Havanna– which shows the diversity of relationships that can be derived from the same. It is also discussed the problem of convivial unions and out of bedlock children, a most frequent situation in Cuba at the time.
