This article focuses on a comparative analysis of the sugar industry in both Dominican Republic and Porto Rico, between 1870 and 1930. It is argued that the development and interaction of plantation bases were different in both cases, and concludes that «no two plantations are alike». The study is based on primary and secondary sources, sectorial magazines, statistics and oral testimonies.
