Trade and slave ships in the port of Havana, 1800-1820

This paper offers a partial study of the role which the trade of neutral countries played in the slave trade, and its contradictory relation with traders and landowners settled in Havana. The study focuses on the lengthy period of conflict among Spain, France and Britain in the early nineteenth century. Measures endorsed by the Cuban authorities so as not to affect the development of Cuba’s sugar exports played a major role in this context. The paper draws on original information sources on the topic which have provided new records on the men and ships involved and the number of ‘Bozal slaves’ (black slaves unfamiliar with the Iberian cultures and languages, typically those brought straight from Africa) taken to Havana.
