Using documents from Frcnch archives, the author analyzes the attempts by false envoys of Ferdinand VII to negotiate with Great Britain Ferdinand's conservation of a throne in Mexico, despite the renunciations of Bayona, through a Regcncy Council which would be presided by the viceroy. The discovery of this scheme (which Napoleon himself knew nothing about) and of the impostors, does not diminish the importance of the proportions and possible consequences of the plot.
