The study, part of a broader doctoral thesis about the Consulado de Buenos Aires, attempts to reveal the most important parts of the beginning and crisis of the Enlightened scientific projects of the American-born elite of Buenos Aires. The ideas of the Consulado de Comercio and of its secretary Manuel Belgrano about the compilation and transmission of economic information and the spread of knowledge about political economy and science, are analized in particular. The lack of official support to these projects cause their failure as well as the emergence of extreme political ideas.
