Studies the published and manuscript docurnentation concerning the work of the Spanish Royal Academy of History, beginning with the appointment of an official chronicler of the Indies up to the direct commission given to Muñoz. The Academy created a Committee on the Indies, whose work this articlc follows from the middle of the eighteenth century, outlining the proposals of the members, under the stimulus of the new president Campomanes.
