Towards the end of the nineteenth century, an interesting phenomenon in the history of ideas developed in Argentina, focusing on the definition of «national identity», in the context of massive arrival of inmigrants and the social tensions this caused. This study examines the social and economic factors that influenced the positions adopted by the northwestern sugar élite regarding the so-called «social issue».
