The explosive development of Cuba´s sugar industry in the 1 st half of the 19th century had a profound effect on the environment. First among the white creoles' concerns was the rapid deforestation. Many of them, however, also objected to the industry's growth on the grounds that it was causing a substantial increase of the black population on the island.
