This study is focused on the division of indigenous communities in the South of Chile, between 1927 and 1958, seeking an explanation for the failure of such endeavor. The grounds and objectives of this measure are considered through parliamentary debates and the subsequent difficulties to carry out a massive division, due to the mapuches’ opposition, as well as to the national political changes. Moreover, the above mentioned state policy is connected with the strengthening of the private rural property in the South.
