Abstract

The Cuban Independence War (1895-1898) and the ensuing colonial close-down had a considerable negative balance for Spain, both in human aspects (death, illness and mutilation rates) and in war debts. These latter included repatriation costs of military and civil Spaniards from the freed colonies as well as the payment of war pensions and overdue salaries. Spain´s socio-economic problems were topped off with those of the social and work reinsertion of the repatriated, which were not adequately solved by governmental authorities which combined economic impotence and voluntary oblivion.
