This paper analyses Republican symbols and rituals at three different times and places of XIXth century Latin America. Its aim is to explore the construction of the identity of a nation, taking as starting point the invention, recreation and reinterpretation of these modern symbols, and considering also their link with the old regime. Furthermore we try to develop a few theoretical points about the part those symbols and rituals play on the building of modern political identities.
