In the last few years, mesoamerican studies have focused on power structure analyses which had formerly been left to the wayside but which, nevertheless, have been valued as key elements in the political development of European states. One of these aspects has been group power struggles to obtain political control. This article will explore the importance of factionalism as a dynamic factor in the complex mesoamerican politics of the postclassic period.
