This article studies the political and intellectual debate developed within the Rio de la Plata liberal intelligentsia in mid 19th Century over the features that were desirable for the «post-rosista» political regime. Focus is placed on questions such as political authority and social consensus, and on their incidence for the construction of a new legitimacy after a long period of disagreements.
