Chili within Peru: War and State Construction in South America, 1881-1884

This article analyzes the role played by the Chilean state during the War of the Pacific, 1879- 1884. It highlights the performance of its bureaucracy in the construction of a political network in Peru and also discusses the impact of the latter in Chile´s state making process. Between 1881- 1884 the Chilean State unfolds to a foreign territory and by doing so improves its administrative skills. This reasoning will lead it to explore its authoritarian nature in Peru, where the absence of the State and of civil society allowed its political and ideological predominance.
