Sociedades indígenas y encomienda en el Tucumán Colonial. Un análisis comparado de la visita de Luján de Vargas

Abstract

This article offers a panoramic as well as comparative overview of the consequences of the colonial policy on the indigenous societies of the Charca region, through the study of the general visit undertaken by the Charcas Oidor Martínez Luján de Vargas to the encomiendas of Tucuman, between 1693 and 1694. The analysis is focused on such variables as land property, work and tax systems, and the native response to the particularities adopted by the encomienda system in each jurisdiction. Finally, it examines the miscegenation and cultural change contexts that had become visible towards the end of 17^th Century
