Based on previously untapped archival sources, both public and private, this article reconstructs the professional and social trajectory of the Roger brothers, two small merchants from the French Basque Country who made their fortunes in the Cadiz-based trade of the late eighteenth century. The focus is on the conditions of their social advancement and on the resources they brought to bear in an extremely unfavorable context, given the turmoil in Spanish-French relations and the downturn that struck Cadiz-based colonial commerce.
