The Second Empire and religious tolerance in Mexico according to the periodical press: 1863-1867. Negations and negotiations

The article studies the religious tolerance introduced by Maximilian of Habsburg during the Second Empire in Mexico (1863-1867). Supported by newspaper sources and, to a lesser extent, archives, it describes the drafting process of the relevant decree. Based on the study of political discourse, it lists the political pressures and journalistic leaks to which the legislation was subjected, as well as some of its historical and doctrinal sources. Likewise, it analyses press reaction, which ranged from silence to celebration and rejection to resignation. It suggests a link between civilization and Christianity, verifiable in both the opponents and promoters of tolerance. In short, it seeks to understand imperial tolerance in Mexican history, to emphasize the political accommodation caused by the measure, and to qualify the supposedly inevitable confrontation between Catholic hierarchs and monarchical authorities.
