Estado republicano y tributo indígena en la sierra central en la post independencia

Abstract

The author studies the taxation policy introduced by the republican state after Independence, in an attempt to clarify state action regarding the situation attempts designed by the government, as there is no indication of dominant tendencies in this society, with special reference to the Mantaro valley. Using abundant documentary sources, he concludes that there was a considerable permeability of the area's peasantry towards the modernization attempts designed by the government, as there is no indication of violent reaction against them. The reason for this is found in the existence of a farmers' organization which was less archaic than those existing in other areas, specially in the southern Andes, and in the tendency to privatize common lands, even before the fiscal reforms, and in the establishment of family economies which were quite self-sufficient.
