The Activities of the Five Principal Guilds of Madrid in Peru: Preliminary Notes

The object of this study is the presence of Madrid's Five Major Guilds in overseas trade. The creation of commercial agencies in different places offered a platform for their business. In the case of Peru, Arequipa was the first town with which they developed ties, and in 1786 the mercantile house of Lima was founded. The authors examine in depth the vicissitudes of the Five Guilds' activities in the viceroyalty, indicating their main interests there. In contrast with what happened in New Spain, in Peru the association was able to get established in those areas which it considered most advantageous to the growth of its business. The story of the Five Guilds is related to the difficulties of the Spanish treasury, and in general to the Bourbon reform programme which granted the Guilds' petitions.
