Based on chronicles and documents issued by the colonial administration, this article attempts to trace the historical development of a frontier region in the Peruvian viceroyalty in arder to discover which aspects have contributed most significantly, from a pluridimensional perspective, to its regional configuration. Historiographical and ethnohistorical approaches are combined to give a global view of the ethnic, social and economic components, which are analyzed per se and in relation with one another.
