Gives important details taken from chronicles and contcmporary sources about the first Spanish city in America; its foundation (6th January, 1494), its urban features, and a through discussion of the reasons for abandonning it in 1500: strategic (unsuitable site, scarcity of farm land, harbour too shallow) and environmental (sickness, destructive fire, raids), which led to emigration and the substitution of La Isabela by Santo Domingo, an urban centre with a better future.
