The Spanish expedition round the world towards the end of the eighteenth century represented an attempt by the enlightencd monarchy to discover the keys to apprehcnding a sociological legality which would make it possible to reinforce imperial power in the face of irreparable political, military and economic failure. The analysis of this legality, in the context of the scientific expeditions of the time, is presented as similar to the aesthetics of Baroque gardening.
