Stressing the enlightened experience of international competition for scientific knowledge, Marce! Mauss's model for Pacific societies (British Columbia and Polynesia) is applied to the expeditions of Cook and Malaspina. In this way the author explains the interrelationship that Cook established with other contemporary European voyagers in terms of national and personal prestige, and the sentiments of Malaspina towards Cook himself.
