Abstract

Describes the reform movement which Linnaeus' new system introduced in European botany, and its increasing acceptance among Spanish pharmacists and doctors, led for many years by Casimiro Gómez Ortega, the director of the new Botanic Garden in Madrid (1771-1800). He is connected with the most famous Enlightenment expeditions, particulary with those of botanical interest, whose utilitarian (pharmacological and commercial) repercussions are stressed.
