Enlightened science and new routes: the expeditions of Juan de Lángara to the Pacific Ocean, 1765-1773

A brief panorama of European progress in the calculation of longitude by estimating lunar distances, and its relation with voyages made by Spanish ships to the Philippine lslands round the Cape of Good Hope, serves as an introduction to the specific subject under study. Lángara's three voyages, in particular, shed light on the interpretation of the influence that the esta blishment of new routes had on the improvement of nautical science, as well as on the contribution made by the enlightened reforms introduced by the Spanish Royal Navy.
