Overview of the European colonial map in the second half of the eighteenth century, stressing the novelty of international rivalry for control of the Pacific islands and trade. Describes the evolution of Spanish expeditions, in the light of this colonial competition, which respond to political, economic and scientific challenges from other western nations.
