After examining the existing typologies of eighteenth-century expeditions, usually based on the criterion of specialization, the authors propose a new typology based on their relation with the State. This makes it possible to describe a long list of expeditions over a period of time, ,reaching certain provisional conclusions of more universal significance, which in turn permit a more adequate comparison and identification in the context of contemporary European expeditions.
