Abstract

The Church, and in particular Leon XIII, intervened actively to mediate in the search for a peaceful solution to the conflict between Spain and the United States in 1898, over the Cuban question. The analysis of diverse documentation from the Archives of the Vatican and Foreign Affairs in Madrid traces the policies of the Spanish and United States governments, and stresses that cause of the failure of the attempts to mediate was the intransigence of the American attitude.
