The birth of Angel Guimerá in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1845 was no accident. It must be seen in the general context of the establishment there of an important group of Catalonians who came to the Canary Islands in the first half of the nineteenth century, in pursuit of their business in trade and navigation. This article analyzes the social and economic circumstances of this migration.
