The first Spanish American epidemic is dated in 1493, and described as a "gripe del cerdo". It occurred quite a few years before the 1518 outbreak of smallpox. These conclusions are based in the contemporary testimonies of Columbus and his doctor Alvarez Chanca, and on other supporting data taken from Anglería, Fernández de Oviedo, Hernando Columbus, and Herrera.
