The Natural and Moral Histories that appeared fundamentally in the American provinces during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries constitute a model for the comprehension of the New World that can be considered, in itself, a literary genre. In the work of A. J. Cavanilles the author attempts to reveal those aspects which make it similar to that genre, and also the ways in which Spanish natural science of the Enlightenment is rooted in its own cultural tradition.
