In the 1680s problems arose in the remote rural village of San Mateo Ixtatán in Guatemala, between the priest and a group of natives. The bishop and the king's counsel in the high court intervened, the former to defend the priest and the latter in defense of the natives. These events and the legal procedures followed are an example of the jurisdictional tensions which existed between ecclesiastical and civil authorities and also of the way in which the high court intervened on behalf of the natives.
