One of the most outstanding and interesting figures of Charles III's reign was Jorge Escobedo. Born in Jaén, to one of the most powerful noble families of Andalusia, Escobedo reached the highest peaks of political power and became one of the most important reformist civil servants in America. This article offers the main lines of his biography, his academic studies, and above all, his extensive activities as governor, visitor general and superintendent of the treasury in Perú (1776-1782). These positions allowed him to execute efficiently and with considerable success the complex measures of economic and political-administrative renovation proposed by the Bourbon reform project.
