Juan Ginés de Sepulveda did not defend the enslavement of the Indians of the New World but the establishment of a temporary Spanish government of them. The object would be to bring their customs nearer those of European societies and promote their conversion to Christianity. This proposal was not meant to harm the Indian but represented a different theory of civilization.
