The author analyzes the flow of migrants between Spain and America in the period 1598-161O, stressing the impact it had on the regions where sailors were recruited, and the partial transformation of workers into permanent inmigrants into America. Migrant workers not only reinforced Spanish presence in America but, because of the demographic characteristics of the marine and military population, altered the distribution by sexes of the Sapnish inmigrants, thus fomenting mixed marriages and unions.
