The study of the Andean farmers and their possibilities of integration requires konowledge of the significance for this social group of the land they cultivate and which links them with their traditional culture. This study of land holding reveals its double function: creating both harmony and conflict between Spanish and Indian interests, making the integration of the letter in the colonial and national order theoretically possible by their access to private property, and eventually assii:nilating both Spaniards and Indians in the economic category of peasants.
