Although the case against Araujo, president of the Audiencia, may be considered as a response to his actions as head of the government in the Quito region, in this article it is studied as an example of the conflict which existed in Quito over local power. The study in depth of this case -examining its global structure and a series of elements which justify this interpretation- permit us to approach subjects like the identification of the members of groups in opposition, the establishment of alliances, the existence of family ties, the positions and organims for which and from which the parties fight, the aims of different groups, and so on.
