Estudio de las estrategias comerciales desarrolladas por un criollo limeño (José Antonio Lavalle Cortés), como un reacomodo a la nueva realidad del comercio libre, desde 1779. Sobre protocolos notariales y libros de aduana se siguen los negocios de Lavalle, que realiza con productos nuevos (cacao, cobre, cascarilla), así como la trata negrera y el manejo financiero de importantes capitales alcanzando altos beneficios, lo que le sitúa en un lugar destacado de la sociedad de Lima.
