Abstract

This article is a reflection about the birth and development of Spanish Americanist historiography and its relation with the political culture in the 19th century. Focused from a somehow comparative point of view, 1) we highlight the importance of two fundamental institutions: the Archive of the Indies and the Academy of History; 2) we analyse the ties among political culture, professional erudition and the first university historians; and 3) we stress the particular case of Rafael Altamira and the emergence of the first American Archaeology.
