This article examines the Cuzco press in the early republic, 1820-1840. Contradicting the interpretation of the caudillo period as senseless militarism, it demonstrates the need to take the era’s ideological battles seriously. Liberals and Conservatives arduously debated in newspapers and pamphlets, presenting their programs and emphasizing their discrepancies. Despite the predominance of personal attacks and satire, the press had a political content that shaped postcolonial struggles and influenced the development of Peruvian literature.
