In the last decade many historians have paid attention to the problem of the african population in Buenos Aires, in particular during the Colonial period. However much less interest has been given to this problem after 1820, that is to say, during the nation building process. This article aims at partly filling this gap through the study of topics such as coloured people’s wills, the black man as owner of real estate property, manumission, or slave market (which continued by inertia despite the liberation will of the Independence movement). It is expected that this analysis will shed light on little known questions regarding Buenos Aires «pardos» and «morenos» during the 19th Century.
