Abstract

In 1740 the Comercio del Perú’s cashflow -which had been taken to Panama for the Portobelo Fair- had to be moved to Guayaquil and later to Quito due to the English threat over Panama. This article analyses the conflict between the owners of mules and the merchants over the freight prices between Babahoyo and Guaranda, as well as the role played by the then President of Quito, Jose de Araujo y Río, who was moved by personal interest rather than by the search for justice. We also offer a compilation of data related to burden transportation through the Montaña.
