Death in Buenos Aires, 1871

An overview of different epidemics suffered in Buenos Aires sin ce the sixteenth century, and of the hygienic and sanitary conditions of the city around 1871, is followed by a critical appraisal of sources, before dealing with the outbreak of yellow fever in Buenos Aires in that year. The article studies the origins of the disease (exogenous-endogenous), its extension, departure f rom the city as a means of avoiding contagion, and the inept handling of the situation by the authorities.
