This is an exhaustive analysis of the Ordinances of Pedrarias Dávila, which provide the basis for the regulation of spanish-native relations within the framework of the encomienda on the American mainland. The author presents these regional Ordinances, in addition, as a legal alternative which was much nearer the peculiarities of the territory and the social and cultural reality of Panama than were other metropolitan measures, in this case the Laws of Burgos, which for this same reason were relegated to a secondary plane in the area.
