Abstract

Within the extensive colonial urban network, the metropolitan function attributed to several cities, in particular Mexico and Lima, required special efforts by local technical personel regarding infrastructure. This article describes the problems caused by their intervention, and the types of scientific literature in which they expressed their ideas. Meteorological forecasts, road maintenance, drinking water, floods, and the creation of port infrastructure, all brought together early local technical specialists and consolidated a tradition of scientific and technological knowledge concerning their own respective areas.
