This article examines how the population settled in the province of Hualgayoc, located in the northern Peruvian department of Cajamarca, earned a living during the latter decades of the nineteenth century. The structure and organisatlon of the local mining industry is discussed, as are socioeconomic systems and relations in the province's haciendas. Economic activity among peasant freeholders is also reviewed, with stress being laid on their high levels of geographical mobility and integration into the national market.
