The author studies the different factors conditioning the process of evangelization in Peru and Japan, together with the characteristics of local religions, which led to syncretisms, of at least confusions. He insists on the importance of the political and economic background of the Catholic Church's missionary work, pointing out too the factors which led to antagonisms between Orders. Finally, he examines tolerance and doctrinal intransigence as strategies of the same evangelizing impulse.
